How do you pick these yards?
|
|
Well
we come in at night with a tiller
... not really. As we've
talked to people about our project
many people have offered their
yards. It's actually quite
encouraging to see people that are
interested in being a part of
creating growing, productive spaces
rather than lawns. |

|
Where do you get your plants? |
|
We are starting our
plants from seeds. Many of them are
being started indoors in
pots we made
from newspaper. Once the
seedlings are ready for a bigger pot
or to go in the ground we can simply
plant the whole 'pot' and the
newspaper will decompose. This
method doesn't disturb the young
roots as the plant is transferred to
its new home. |
|
What
do I do to offer my yard? |
|
This year we have all
the yards we need but we'd love to
have you
involved. Drop us a note to
see how you can be involved and
we'll add your yard to the list for
next season. |

Debbie's
Yard
It all sort of started here
when Debbie decided that grass was a waste
of water and energy. After taking down
a considerable number of tree-sized weeds,
she plowed up her yard. Next she
covered it with plastic in the heat of
August to kill the weed seeds. |

Bybee
Yard
This yard had already been tilled and gardened a
few years ago. The enthusiasm of the
first year has waned and the yard now
untended. Debbie and Jean added their
enthusiasm to the mix to revive this yard
making a few configuration 'suggestions' on
the way. The yard already had garlic
planted and is ready for spring. |

Petersen
Yard
This yard is our largest
space in the city offering many possibilities.
Currently we have 2 25' x 25' plots tilled
and fertilized but there is more that twice
that much space. We plan to utilize
this space for larger crops that take too
much room to be feasible in a smaller yard.

Dalrymple
Lot - Fort Morgan
SOC's largest garden is
located in Fort Morgan bringing fresh,
organic produce to the eastern plains in a
CSA format. |
|
Gus
Yard
This is our most 'urban'
garden. Just east of downtown Denver, this
yard is an example of finding places to
plant given the space that you have. |
